Over the past couple of weeks, you have probably been fretting over what happened to the Convivial Boar. Why is he not posting? Has he abandoned us? Is he marooned on an island somewhere?
In desperation you may have regressed toward the frozen food aisle (or should I say isle) or maybe something in a can.
Well, put down that can-opener, my friend —I’m back!
And for those of you who assumed that I was just goofing off or taking it easy, shame, shame. For I have been working hard on your behalf by immersing myself in the study of the culture and food of Maui. That’s right, I selflessly sequestered myself in Hawaii devouring countless delectable fresh-caught fish, celebrating through the feasting and dancing of luaus, and sipping the tropical nectars of the island. And all of this, I did in search of a few nuggets of inspiration to share with you. Strictly business, my good man, strictly business.
You are welcome. And here is a sample of what I endured…
Luau
For the convivial sort, it is hard to beat a luau. Traditionally, the feast features a whole roasted pig cooked in the ground. Of course, I had to investigate…
As shown below, the Luau involves a ceremonial digging up of the pig.
Then the removal of the burlap covering…
And then for the presentation…
Mama’s Fish House
Many people suggested that we try Mama’s Fish House proclaiming it to be among the best meals of their lives. With that kind of hype, we couldn’t pass it up, and to our joyful surprise it lived up to the praise. One of my favorite aspects of the menu where the descriptions of the fish –“Broadbill swordfish caught in the dark of night near Hilo by Pete Galicinao.”
While all of our meals were amazing, the Sons of Boar stole the show as they devoured this whole Opakapaka.
And we topped the meal off with this delectable treat…
Straight from the Coconut
As we drove along the road to Hana, we stopped for a view of the Northern Coast of Maui and discovered this guy serving up fresh coconut.
Tropical Libations
And finally, I conducted extensive research into the nectar of the island…
All of that to say, the Convivial Boar is ready to put his research to work creating tropical inspired feasts –of course, I may need a little vacation first.
Aloha, my friend.
